Low-Income Weatherization Boot Camp (ABCD, Inc)
Training sessions are being held about every other week based on demand. To date, two have been held and two more are scheduled. Each session is four days, the curriculum is below. There are 12 participants per session. Training manuals and tools are provided. Dress in work clothes. Bring lunched and snacks. There is a 30 minute lunch break.
The location is 12 Hazelton Street, Mattapan (Old Mattapan Public Library). Parking is on street and limited, so carpooling is suggested. We are guests in the neighborhood, so please be considerate.
Basic Insulation: This class is for crew members who need to demonstrate competency in insulating attics and wall cavities, including techniques for removing siding and dense packing walls. Topics include: Health and Safety, building science basics, heat transfer fundamentals, attic insulation, installing vents, sidewall insulation – removal and replacing siding, drilling and patching holes, installing dense-pack insulation in other locations, other insulation treatments.
Advanced Insulation: This class is for crew chiefs that need to demonstrate competency in managing an insulation job, including maximizing crew efficiency, identifying key insulation details, and working with interior and exterior attic access. Topics include: Basic Insulation Health and Safety, on-site coordination, dense packing, and testing equipment for adequate pressure, air sealing and ventilation, attic accesses, thermal boundary, key details – house style specific strategies.
Basic Air-Sealing: This class is for crew members who need to demonstrate competency in sealing typical attic bypasses and openings, including sealing around chimneys and flues and creating air tight enclosures for recessed lights. Topics include: Health and Safety, air-sealing basics, house as a system, heat transfer fundamentals, the air barrier, sealing chases, sealing around chimneys/flues, recessed light enclosures, duct sealing, working with duct insulation.
Advanced Air-Sealing: This class is for crew chiefs that need to demonstrate competency in managing an air-sealing job, including identifying key air-sealing details in a home and performing blower door tests. Topics include: Health and safety, combustion appliance testing, blower door pressure diagnostics, air-sealing existing homes – house style specific strategies, building tightness limits, air flow standards, background mechanical ventilation systems.
General Heat Waste: This class is for crew chiefs and crew members who need to demonstrate competency in weatherstripping doors, tightening windows and replacing windows. In addition, insulation of domestic hot water tanks, heating distribution ducts and pipes will be covered. Insulation of basement box sills and foundations will also be explained. This is a lab day working with mock-ups.
